
The Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics was established in 2012 as a result of the reorganization of the Department of Russian Philology by the decision of the Academic Council of the L.N. Gumilev ENU (Protocol No. 8 of July 2, 2012).
The head of the department is Ph.D., Professor E.A. Zhuravleva, a linguist, specialist in the field of language theory, sociolinguistics, intercultural communication, winner of the state grant "The Best University Teacher" (2005, 2014).
The level of qualification of teachers is very high, the department consists of 27 teachers, including 6 doctors of Sciences, professors Sh.K. Zharkynbekova, E.A. Zhuravleva, M.B. Nurtazina, Zh.N. Zhunusova, A.E. Agmanova, J.A. Dzhambaeva; 8 candidates of Sciences, associate professors B.M. Asmagambetova, B.H. Galieva, T.S. Kusainova, G.K. Ayupova, F.K. Isenova, M.K. Sharipova, A.B. Nurgazina, L.R. Krymova; 2 PhD doctors – J.B. Seliverstova, M.V. Loginova; 10 masters E.E. Yavorskaya, A.K. Yeshekeneva, D.Z. Shaimerdenova, D.A. Postolyuk, K.E. Akhmetchina, O.S. Mikheeva, A.H. Abdrakhmanova, J.K. Adilova, G.S. Samsenova, A.A. Elyubaeva; 1 foreign teacher – Master of Polish Philology Katarzyna Bednarowicz.
Many of the teachers currently working are graduates of the Tselinograd State Pedagogical Institute and the university founded later on its basis. These are M.B. Nurtazina (1974 release), B.M. Asmagambetova (1978 release), E.E. Yavorskaya (Mamekova) (2000 release), J.B. Seliverstova (2005 release), A.K. Yeshekeneva, O.S. Mikheeva (2006 release), A.H. Abdrakhmanova (2015 release), A.A. Yelyubaeva (2021 year of manufacture).
The department currently trains specialists at three levels of training: bachelor's degree – Master's degree – PhD doctorate.
Bachelor's degree programs: 6B01718 – "Russian language and literature".
Master's Degree educational programs: Russian Russian Language and Literature 7M01718, 7M02306 – Philology: Russian Philology.
Educational programs of the PhD doctoral program: 8D02305 – "Philology" (specialization: linguistics).
The department, as a service department, provides teaching of the Russian language at the following faculties of the University: information technology, mechanics and mathematics, physics and Technology, history, social sciences and journalism.
In connection with the expansion of international relations at L.N. Gumilev ENU and the training of foreign students at the university, the teachers of the department specialize in the methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language (Prof. A.E. Agmanova, Associate Professor B.M. Asmagambetova, B.H. Galieva, M.K. Sharipova, Rev. J.K. Adilova, A.A. Elyubaeva).
The teachers of the department conduct active research work, the results of which are published in publications included in the indexing system, such as Web of Science, Scopus, RSCI, as well as recommended by the Committee for Quality Assurance in Education and Science of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan. So, to date, the scientists of the department: Ph.D. Prof. Zharkynbekova Sh.K., Zhuravleva E.A., Agmanova A.E., Nurtazina M.B., Zhunusova Zh.N., D.F.N., assoc. prof. Dzhambaeva Zh.A., PhD, assoc. Asmagambetova B.M., Galieva B.H., Ph.D., assoc. Ayupova G.K., Nurgazina A.B., Sharipova M.K. have scientific publications in international scientific publications Web of Science, Scopus and the Hirsch index.
Teachers of the department actively cooperate with teachers of the city and the region: they work on courses at the Institute of Teacher Training, advise teachers of Literature, participate in the work of commissions of the Astana City Department of Education for checking and reviewing graduation papers of school students, are among the active participants of the commission for the preparation and conduct of subject Olympiads in Russian language and literature, members of the expert groups on the UNT, act as part of the jury at city and regional competitions of schoolchildren in the Russian language and literature on the line of "Daryn" (B.M. Asmagambetova, B.H. Galieva, J.A. Dzhambaeva, M.K. Sharipova, A.K. Yeshekeneva, O.S. Mikheeva, etc.).
The department has good material and technical equipment, the Center for Polish Language and Culture, the Laboratory of Intercultural Communication and Applied Linguistics work. All classrooms are used as educational ones, at the same time events are held in them (Olympiads, scientific conferences, seminars for teachers and school teachers with the invitation of foreign and domestic scientists, etc.), scientific research is carried out with the involvement of students, undergraduates and doctoral students.
An important part of the work of the department is the holding of international scientific conferences and seminars, as well as the participation of faculty of the department in scientific seminars in Kazakhstan and abroad.
Thus, the department annually holds an international scientific student conference: "The Russian language in the XXI century: research of the young". The conference is attended by students from educational institutions not only in Kazakhstan, but also from near and far abroad (Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Poland, China, Slovakia, etc.). Foreign universities have been co-organizers of the conference over the years: Sibai Institute (branch) of Bashkir State University (Russia), Institute of Russian Studies of Presov University (Slovakia), Tula State Pedagogical University named after L.N. Tolstoy, Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University, Surgut State Pedagogical University (Russia). The conference materials are indexed in the scientometric database of the RSCI.
An important scientific and practical event was the holding of the International Scientific and Practical Conference: "Text in the system of teaching Russian language and literature", which is attended by Kazakhstani and foreign scientists. So, in 2023, on the initiative of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, the conference was held jointly with the Department of Foreign Languages and Business Communication of UGSU (Russia), the Department of Philological Education and Journalism of SurGPU (Russia), the ONC "Institute of Education and Humanities" of the I. Kant Baltic Federal University (Russia). Following the results of the conference, collections of materials are published, indexed in the RSCI.
An integral part of the department's work is the constant participation of its staff in international seminars and webinars in Kazakhstan, Russia and other countries.
The department has a high scientific potential to achieve high results in scientific, educational and methodical activities.
