History of the creation of the faculty
The Faculty of Philology begins to operate in the year of the opening of the Tselinograd Pedagogical Institute, since the end of the summer of 1962. Then 100 people were admitted to the first year at the hospital and 100 people to the correspondence department.
Russian Russian language, Russian literature, Kazakh and foreign languages all teachers - philologists, specialists in the Russian language, Russian literature, Kazakh and foreign languages - were organized at the faculty. By order of the Minister of Higher and Secondary Special Education Kaz.SSR the head of the Department of Russian Language and Literature was appointed Candidate of Philological Sciences G.Y.Dementieva
In 1965, when the volume of teaching load increased and a significant number of teachers (about 20 people) already worked at the department, it became possible to create an independent department of Russian and foreign literature. Its head was the former vice-rector for Academic Affairs, Associate Professor L.S.Kamionsky. Work was to be done on the formation of a team of departments, on improving the qualifications of members of departments and their scientific and methodological potential. The task was to ensure the educational process in philological disciplines, minimizing the negative phenomena caused by the "disease" of growth. During the period from 1962 to September 1, 1992, 26 issues were made. The first issue took place in 1966. Associate professor, Candidate of Philological Sciences of KazSU X.M.Saikiev was invited as the first chairman.
In September 1988, the Department of "Kazakh language and Literature" was opened at the Faculty of Philology. In the first academic year, 26 students were accepted to this department; currently, more than 400 people study here. Since 1990, the correspondence form of education with a contingent of 50 people has also been functioning at this department. In addition, accelerated (2.5 years) correspondence courses are open for people with higher education. On October 15, 1989, the Department of Kazakh Philology was organized, the head of which is associate professor Sh.K.Mertesheva. In the first year there were only 4 people at the department. Currently, there are 16 teachers working here. In 1992, the department was divided into the Department of Kazakh literature and the Department of the Kazakh language.
The Faculty of Philology of ENU after L.N. Gumilyov is a newly formed structural subdivision of the University, which was created on the basis of the reorganization of the Faculty of History and Philology according to the Rector's Order No. 33–n dated February 10, 2009.
Over the almost 60-year period of the faculty's existence, a whole composition of deans has changed: S.V.Zeitunyan, A.E.Son, P.Ya.Chernykh, A.A.Chukuev, V.N.Afanasyeva, G.A.Askarov, I.A.Shapovalova, G.A.Chernetskaya, N.J.Agubaev, S.S.Tleulimova, S.A.Maken, A.N.Kashkinbayev, K.A.Akhmetov, N.A.Alekseenko, A.K.Kusaionov, I.A.Rau.
In 2000, the Faculty of History and Philology was transformed into a humanitarian institute, the heads of which in different years were: Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor T.S.Sadykov, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Zh.A.Ermekbayev, Ph.D., Professor D.Kamzabekuly, Ph.D., Professor Sh.K.Zharkynbekova.
Departments of the Faculty
Department of Kazakh Linguistics. The Department of Kazakh Linguistics is one of the leading departments of the Faculty of Philology. The department was established in 1992 as the Department of the Kazakh language. Since 1999 it has been renamed the Department of Kazakh Linguistics. Since 2024, the head of the department is Candidate of philological sciences Bibekov Kanysh Tleuzhauly.
Department of Kazakh Literature. The foundations of the Department of Kazakh Literature were laid in 1989. Since 2025, the department has been headed by PhD, Saginadin Gulnaz Saginadinkyzy.
Department of Russian Philology. Russian Russian Philology Department is considered to be one of the oldest departments of the Eurasian National University - the Department of Russian Language, Literature and Foreign Languages, opened in the Tselinograd State Pedagogical Institute named after S.Seifullin on September 1, 1962, stands at the origins. Since 2012, the head of the Department of Russian Philology is Doctor of Philology, Professor Nurgali Kadisha Rustembekkyzy.
Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics. The Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics was established in 2012 as a result of the reorganization of the Department of Russian Philology by the decision of the Academic Council of the L.N. Gumilev ENU (Protocol No. 8 of July 2, 2012). The head of the department is Doctor of PhD., Professor Zhuravleva Evgeniya Aleksandrovna.
Department of Foreign Philology. The Department of Foreign Philology was established in its current form in 2010. It was separated from the Department of Theory and Practice of Foreign Languages. Since 2025, the head of the department is Candidate of pedagogical sciences Baidrakhmanov Dossym Khassenuly.
Department of Theory and Practice of Translation. In 1994, the Department of Translation was established, which on October 17, 2005, by order N. 169, was named the Department of General Linguistics and Translation Theory. Currently, the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation is headed by PhD, Akizhanova Diana Muratkyzy.
Department of Chinese Philology. From 2011 to 2019, the department was headed by Doctor of Philology, Professor Duken Masimkhanuly. Since 2024, the department has been headed by PhD Isaev Abilkhan Ukibayuly.
Department of Practical Kazakh language. In 1996, the departments of the two universities were merged into one department of the practical Kazakh language. From 2012 to the present, the department is headed by PhD., Professor Kulmanov Kuandyk Sandybekuly.
Department of Foreign Languages. By order N. 544 of September 27, 1996, the Department of Foreign Languages of Natural Specialties and the Department of Foreign Languages for Humanities were organized. Since 2024, the department is headed by PhD Balkhimbekova Perizat Zhanatovna
